November 2006 I had abdominal discomfort and blood in stool. My doctor ordered a colonoscopy. The blood was from hemroids and the discomfort was from poor diet and stress. The 2 mm carcinoid polyp in rectum they found had nothing to do with my symptoms. I am very fortunate they caught it early.

I was diagnosed with severe heart failure in 1996. Later, after I was diagnosed with carcinoid cancer in 1998, I learned that carcinoid can cause heart damage. My whole world changed. I tried to understand my diagnosis and understand what was happening to me all on my own. Fortunately, I have an incredibly loving and supportive husband, three great children and wonderful friends who surrounded me with their love and wouldn’t let me do it alone.
Through The Carcinoid Cancer Foundation I gained knowledge of carcinoid and gained life long friends who are living with similar issues as my own. I have become passionate in my desire to develop methods to create awareness of carcinoid and the treatments available. I have an equal desire to help those newly diagnosed to educate themselves, to become their own advocate for their healthcare and to realize there truly is the opportunity to live a positive, fulfilling lifeeven with carcinoid.
Though I was initially given a life expectancy of approximately 4-5 years I have gratefully lived well beyond that and been given the opportunity to watch my children grow, spend time with my husband, and play with my first grand baby. I have been forced to slow my life down and have truly learned to “stop and smell the roses.”

I’ve been living with carcinoid syndrome & liver mets since diagnosis in ‘97. With a strong will & desire to educate myself, I’ve spent several years doing extensive research & working independently as an advocate for many newly diagnosed noids. I manage my disease in partnership with my healthcare providers & participate in support groups where I’ve found new friends & amazing people. These things & the support of my husband Ed have helped me maintain control & keep a positive attitude.
